We are a private greyhound rescue group in Melbourne passionate about rescuing and re-homing greyhounds.
Greyhounds are very gentle dogs but unfortunately the racing industry breeds far too many every year. they are exploited and mistreated by the racing industry which only has use for them while they run profitably.
If the greyhound is not profitable it is most likely killed. It is a sad fact that only a fraction of the approximate 22,000 greyhounds bred each year is alive to be re-homed.
Some people ask “what’s wrong with that?” but we clearly see how wrong this behavior is and we wish our tax money would not go towards racing industry subsidies.
We rescue and rehabilitate as many greyhounds as possible but the sheer number of unwanted greyhounds is overwhelming and makes it impossible to save them all.
There are thousands of greyhounds in need of a home. Thousands are euthanised. Thousands disappear every year.
We celebrate the ones we can save and for those greyhounds lucky enough to make it to Kay’s Greys, their lives are changed forever.
We rehabilitate our greyhounds in foster care and find loving and permanent homes. We find that all greyhounds respond very well to their training and adapt easily to pet life.
No greyhound in our care is kept in kennels. They are all looked after by foster carers. That way our greyhounds are used to family living and in many cases used to living with other dogs, cats and children.
By fostering all our greyhounds we are best able to test if a greyhound is cat and child friendly and asses his/her character thoroughly to find a suitable permanent home.
It is very important to match a dog to the right environment so that both the dog and the new owners are happy.
Every dog is different and we will match a greyhound with its new home based on character compatibility and not size, color or prettiness.
Kay’s Greys is also here to support the people who have adopted a greyhound from other organizations. For those who adopt from us, we never say goodbye for good and want to keep in touch with all the lovely people and dogs that cross our path.
If you would like to get involved please contact us for a chat. Helping hands are always welcome and there is a variety of task which need doing on a daily basis. Whether you are good at fundraising or have some time to help us look after the dogs please get in touch.

Hi, looking to potentially adopt a greyhound. I would ideally love a greyhound that is cat friendly and can be walked without a muzzle. Is this likely? Or a pup. Really look forward to hearing back from you. Thanks Simon beshara
Hi Simon, that’s fantastic and I’ll send you an email to discuss your options further. Martina
Hi, I love greyhounds and we would love to adopt one that’s child (they are generally right?) and pet friendly. Could you please get in touch with me? Thank you, Franziska
Absolutely, I’ll send you an email now with some more info! Martina
God bless you – I have adopted a Greyhound who saved my life 10 years ago. I say that he saved my klife because without him my life would never have been so much fun as it has been. He is the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to me. Nearly 14 1/2 years old now he is showing the symptoms of the effects of is racing days and has surly entered the beginning of his old age.
I have never taken for granted how lucky I am to have had him for 10 years and when he passes I will not replace him. That would not be right – but I will start my own Greyhound re4scue of sorts in Rosaito Baja California and will foster as many Greyhounds as needed helping the rescue people north of the border That will be Max’s legacy – and of course in the memories of the thousands of Mexicans who have seen him run on the beach or stroll revolution Street with such elegance – he is surely as popular as any rock star in TJ
I wanted to add the reason I had adopted Maximiilian ( my best friend ever ). When I was 8 or 9 my father showed me the front page story in the Miami Herald Newspaper. The story of how a Greyhound caught the mechaical rabbit and was electrocted was horifying to me and naturally my very wise father told me all about the horrible lives the Greyhounds had to live so that some greedy men could profit from their speed and competitive instinct.
It was not until about 40 years later that I had a life style that I felt would be fair to such a beautiful and deserving animal like that of a Greyhound that I took that great big step and swore to never let any harm become my adopted Greyhounds fait and of course to love him
Hi Jeffrey, thanks for sharing your story and your love for Maximillian! Martina
Hi Martina, would love to adopt a greyhound. About 18 mths ago we met a couple and their adopted greyhound and had a long chat about how wonderful he was. At that time I was not prepared to take on the extra responsibility as my daughter is epileptic and low spectrum autistic. It was suggested at one time that she would benefit from a companion dog but a trained one costs $30,000. We recently found better medication for her seizures and have erected a fence around our yard. My daughter is very placide and affectionate but can become upset if left to her own devises. I was impressed with the greyhound we met as he patiently tolerated my daughter’s show of affection including hugs, pats, and kisses. She even draped herself on his back at one stage! I have had many chats with Rosie(daughter) about dog ownership and we dog sit on occasions. I think we are ready so please get in touch and hopefully we can find a match.
Hi Helen, thanks for getting in touch and I’ll email you to discuss further! Martina
Hi we are looking to adopt a greyhound to keep our gorgeous 15 year old greyhound/lab cross company. Tia is still very active despite her age and we think now is the right time in our lives to add another dog to the family. As well as Tia we have two very hyper boys who are 3 and 6.
Please could you advise us on the adoption process and costs involved.
Many thanks look forward to hearing from you.
Jackie
Hi Jackie, thanks for your comment and I’ll email you now further information. Martina
Hi, Martina – My wife and I are seriously thinking of adopting a greyhound, and would love to discuss this further with you. We live alone, so compatibility with children or other pets is not an issue. Any information you can provide would be much appreciated. – Peter
Hi Peter, more than happy to provide you with more info and just sent you an email to discuss further. Martina

please can anybody give advice,,on reabilitating a greyhound,,that one has killed a cat,,,,,and attacks dogs that come into her space,,she has a fantastic forever home and has been fully worked on to help with many issues that we have now ironed out,,but still has kill cat syndrome and does not allow other dogs in her area she snaps at them,,and permanetly muzzled please if anyone has any help and advice xxxthankyou Anita Williams phd psya bsy
Hi Anita, thanks for getting in touch and from my experience many greyhounds are not cat safe and never will be because of their high prey drive. It sounds like your greyhound could never live with a cat and as greyhound owners we have to accept that. The issue with other dogs can be tackled however with the help of a professional dog trainer. It could be that your greyhound does not know how to behave around other dogs, or is very anxious and therefore snaps at them but with exposure, socialising time and professional help, your greyhound can learn to be nice to other dogs. It is hard to tell without having met your dog but greyhounds are clever and learn fast when in the right training program. Hope this helps and I hope you find an understanding and gentle professional dog trainer to help you with your greyhound. Martina
Thanks Martina
Hi Martina, You sent me an email about a dog coat for Katrina I answer it but it came back could you please send it again
thank you Kay Groves
Oh no, not sure why her email address is returning the email… I’ll email you the address again. Martina
Hi there. I have just been fortunate enough to adopt a greyhound pup from the RSPCA. I am so impressed with his ability to learn the house rules in a very short time and he’s very relaxed with my cat – even though she is very put out by his presence. What I’m wondering is whether it is a good idea to start getting him familiar with wearing a coat while he’s young as he will need one in the winter. Do you know of anyone who sells coats for greyhound pups? I have only been able to find adult sizes. Thanks and I think you’re doing a fabulous work.
Hi Anne, congratulations on adopting your greyhound puppy and greyhounds are absolutely amazing in terms of their adaptability. They learn so fast and it feels like they have been in your home forever after just a few days.
It may be a bit too hot for your puppy to wear a coat now but I understand you would like him to get used to it now. Personally I wouldn’t bother with it and he will learn to wear it when it is cold. If you are after a coat for a young greyhound, check out http://www.fairdinkumdogs.com.au/ for the right size and fit. Hope this helps! Martina
hi im an avid greyhound fan and ive adopted two in england where we currently live. we are waiting for visas to come to live and work in melbourne and would love to get involved with greyhound rescue ie walks and meeting other greyhound owners. its a massive move for our family and of course they greys. any info on settling them in etc would be very usefull.
Hi Tracey, it would be great to catch up and go for a walk with your greyhounds once you guys have arrived and settled in. Martina
hi martina il keep in touch an let you know when i know a bit more. take care. thankyou.
Sounds good- speak then!
hi martina, i have just been reading a few of you posts. its it true that all greyhounds need to be muzzled when out walking in public due to bizarre laws??!!! tracey
Hi Tracey, yes unfortunately greyhounds need to be muzzled in Australia. There are exceptions though and the assessors (trained and paid by the racing industry!!!) can issue a ‘green collar’ if the greyhound passes a temperament test. It is money back into the racing industry which is why my greyhounds don’t undergo the assessment but it is certainly an option for you if you decide to go down that route. In my experience, the greyhounds are used to wearing the muzzle and it doesn’t really bother them to wear it the 1-2 hours per day when out and about. Hope this helps, Martina
Hi, I am very interested in adopting a greyhound, I am one that will fit into my lifestyle . I rescue ex racehorse , I also have 2 cats and a very small Maltese dog. I would love to be able to take both dogs to the farm every day while I am there taking care of all my rescues. So if you feel you would have one that would fit In with our family, I would be very happy, as I have heard they have lovely natures, we also have grandchildren that visit twice a year,
Thanks Karen Larkin
Hi Karen, that sounds wonderful and I have a few greyhounds in mind which could suit your lifestyle. I will email you some more info and also send you a short form to fill in to get the ball rolling. Speak soon, Martina
Hi, I’m interested in finding out more about adopting a greyhound. I’m currently babysitting a friends grey that was rescued from a pound and have fallen in love with them. We have cats and a rabbit but this one hasn’t cared but would need to adopt one that has been exposed to these things.
Congratulations on the work you are doing.
Hi Georgina, thanks for getting in touch and I will email you some more details about our dogs. Thanks Martina
Mum mum is maybe thinking about adopting a grey, but she is very worried that it won’t work with her cats….. I think if I could find a cat friendly one in her area she would really consider it
Hi Tanya, there are many greyhounds which are cat friendly and we currently have two in our care. Send me an email to kaysgreys@gmail.com for more info and to meet them if you like. Martina
Hi, our neighbours at our back fence have 4 greyhounds in a tiny area. The dogs bark and howl continually and have recently started to pull and bite at our adjoining wooden fence creating huge holes (resulting in the one dog been muzzled). We have been concerned about their welfare for a while and were wondering what the best course of action would be to protect these dogs.
Hi that sounds like a horrible situation for all involved and I share your concern about the animal’s welfare. The fact that the dogs howl, bark and destroy the fence is a sign of serious distress and action needs to be taken now. The tricky bit is deciding who to get involved. The RSPCA and your council are in charge of animal welfare but their definition of animal welfare is sometimes questionable. Both bodies can take the dogs away but then the dogs end up in the pound where they are at risk of being destroyed if they don’t get adopted within a short period of time. Especially if the council declares the dogs dangerous, chances are that they end up dead.
Do you know if the dogs are kept for racing or are they pets? If they are retired racers you could ask the owner so surrender them to a rescue group like ours.
It is a tricky situation and I hope you find a solution which helps the dogs. Martina
Hi Martina, thanks for your reply.
I don’t know if they are still racing…they are definitely not pets.
I will try and contact the owner and suggest they surrender the dogs as suggested.
Sharon
Hi.
I recently discovered how amazing greyhounds are and they’ve really touched my heart. I can’t adopt any animals at the moment but I was wondering if u accept donations or have a member program.
Thanks.
Hi Chrissy, greyhounds are truly wonderful dogs and I’m glad you share our love for them. A member program is a great idea and hopefully we will have one soon. Donations are welcome anytime and I will send you an email with the bank details.
Martina
Hi Martina,
This is John (Pixie)
Came across this funny greyhound link.
Hi John and Pixie, thanks for sharing the video- it’s hilarious!
Hi Martina, yes it is very funny, glad you think so as well. One more link and I’ll make that the last since I don’t want to upset the blog flow.
Enjoy. — Reminds me of Joey.
